Five Mistakes Job Seekers Make During Job Application

Five Mistakes Job Seekers Make During Job Application

Brian Tracy once said that everybody is a sales person. A Job application is a personal sales activity. It is an opportunity to showcase your skills and ability to perform a given job. It is obvious that not the best candidate will get the opportunity, but rather the person who is able to persuade the recruiting team that they are able to do the job. If you are not connected, you need to stand out. That is the only way to ensure that you get a job.

  1. Poorly Written CV

Imagine you are a recruiter and you have 150 applications for one position. What do you do? What if you are using a recruitment system to shortlist? A curriculum vitae is your personal marketing document. It requires your full attention. It is the document that the recruiter will decide whether you should be shortlisted or not. Most recruiters will prefer to choose a candidate with a well-written curriculum vitae since it shows your presentation skills. It is advisable, therefore, to get professional help when writing your curriculum vitae. Moreover, due to advancing technology, most recruiters nowadays use recruitment systems to shortlist. Your curriculum vitae should meet acceptable standards for it to shortlist you. Take your time to write your CV or get professional help.

  1. Job Specifications

Do you read the job advert and consider the specifications between the lines? Many people waste their time applying for so many jobs for which they are not qualified. Too many random applications affect the quality of your job applications. As a result, you end up submitting poor applications for the job you are qualified for because you don’t give them the attention they deserve. When shortlisting is done, you are left out. It is advisable to apply for a few jobs, and ensure you submit quality job applications.

  1. Document Attachments

As simple as it may appear, so many people are left out because they don’t attach their documents correctly. It is advisable to attach a PDF format to all applications done via email. For all applications done via recruitment system, it is advisable to attach a word document format of both the CV and the cover letter. The word document format is compatible with all the recruitment systems, while the PDF format is easy to open in an email application. It is very careless to attach photos during application as required to do so. During attachment, it is advisable to attach a cover letter, CV and certificates as three separate documents. Job seekers should know that the attention they give towards their application is the same attention that will be given during shortlisting.

  1. Overrated Salary Expectations

A position offers 30,000/-and you expect 90,000/-. What do you think a recruiter will do? Usually, recruiters ask for salary expectations during the application process to know whether you fit into their budget. It is your duty as a job seeker to do research and know the salary range of the advertised job. You may be qualified, but if you have overrated your expectations, you end up being left out. Recruiters can overlook underrated expectations, although they may be seriously considered for a management job, but not for middle and entry-level jobs. It is advisable for job seekers to give a reasonable range during their job application.

  1. Not Following Application Instructions

Most of the email addresses look like this: jobs@domain.co.ke. These email addresses collect all job applications. In such a case, a recruiter will instruct candidates to cite the position they are applying for as the subject of their emails. When the recruiter receives the applications, he goes ahead and opens the specific position he is shortlisting. This is how most applicants are left out. The application instructions are as important as your application. Read and adhere to them.

It is advisable for job seekers to ensure that these mistakes are avoided. There is an imbalance between demand and supply in the labour market, and employers are receiving an overwhelming number of applications. Commit yourself to standing out during the application process and you are likely to soon land a new job.
