Changeless Change

I echo the statement by retired president Barrack Obama’s Inaugural Address, January 20, 2009 at the National Mall in Washington, DC, “Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends — honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism — these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths.” People are wild and crazy about changing and transforming, however, they have forgotten that some things like virtue cannot change. These are principles that govern success and breaking them consequently results to breaking oneself. They should be written in every man’s creed as the changeless change.

Principles have never changed through difficult or easy times in history. Change is inevitable, let the young or the old, a man or a woman, a husband or a wife, a manager or a subordinate, a leaders or a follower subscribe to this fact; it is inevitable. As much as change has never been evitable, people should know what really changes. Read the biographies of successful people, history of great nations, market leaders in the business world and great leaders; one thing will come out clearly, regardless of the era of history they are chronicled is that honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism were their motivation. These were their guiding principles which lead to them to lose self and serve humanity.

I know you are asking yourself many questions, which is great. The bottom-line of every desire to succeed and climb the ladder of a career, attaining market leadership, becoming famous and getting a world-wide recognition should have its roots in service to humanity. Truth be told, we have many people who own skyscrapers, huge tracks of land, international organization and holding big positions but have no value for dignity of human life. Morality has nearly no space in our society. It would be among the Seven Wonders of the World to act in a compassionate and a kind way in some sectors of the society.

My submission today is that we need to transcend above the so-called success. We need another definition and meaning of success that gives more meaning to life. It all begins with you, my dear reader! What is your definition and meaning of success? Good houses, big car, nice spouse, PhD, fame… name them! This is out fashioned, our fore fathers used to describe success this way, should I tell you why? Because, then, this is what made them find meaning.

In view of our society today, all is at a mess everywhere, what do you think is the best definition of success? I am neither an advocate of laziness nor a champion of poverty, please note that. I am a strong believer in diligence and working smart. However, count all that is at mess: violence at home, at workplace, on the roads and at religious meetings; precisely everywhere. Please trigger your imagination and think with me. What kind of environment are we living in? I am kindly asking. You cannot consider yourself successful while making others victims of pain and trauma. Many are abandoned by their parents who are somewhere counting themselves successful. Children homes are full of children whose parents are still alive; ask these children, they will tell you the pain of growing up without a parent. Where is the value of decency and dignity of life?

Amit Ray Yoga said in his book The Science of Well-Being “Joy is found when you focus your energy on improving human dignity, human capacity and human values.”  I therefore define success as the ratio of the numbers of people that were at the mercy of your help to those you actually ventured into helping. Change can hence apply to the approaches and methods. Principles of success don’t change, they have been and they will be the same. That I call the changeless change.
